Jesus Christ is the head of the universal church (Col 1:18).
What we believe about Jesus and his teachings dictates how we live as local church.
Therefore Austin Journey Church is an independent church that is aligned with the Evangelical Free Church of America, and therefore we govern our church in agreement with this denomination, but not controlled by this denomination. AJC follows Jesus Christ and his word alone. God has given some, not all, the gift of leadership (Rom 12:8) therefore at AJC we follow the biblical example of Elders and Deacons (1 Tim 3:8-13, 5:17).
Elder is a Pastor to the church with the talents and gifts God has given them to lead and shepherd the people in the church. Eldership is not a term of office, but a calling from God, and recognized by the people of God through a vote of confidence and submission to their leadership. Elders are a male only position!
Deacon is a minister to the church with the talents and gifts God has given them to help the Elders accomplish the vision and mission of the church by providing hands on leadership in different ministry areas in accordance from the direction of the elders and the needs of the church. This is an appointed posit ion from the Elders and is recognized by a vote of confidence from the church. This is both a male and female positions!
